Stories of war, stories of help. The Family to Family project visites villages of Zhytomyr, Kyiv and Chernihiv regions

Representatives of the RM Caritas Spes, together with colleagues from Caritas Polska, have recently visited some families who volunteered to participate in the Family to Family project. The trip turned out to be rich: in a few days I managed to visit Zhytomyr region, Kyiv region and Chernihiv region, meet families, as well as learn about their needs and hopes.

... In the house of Angela from the village of Bazar in Zhytomyr region, the walls and ceiling cracked, windows fell out, plaster fell, and the roof was blown off with the fragments of a rocket that fell on the neighboring house. "We managed to fix a little by our own efforts, and also thanks to the help of those who care. But in order to completely restore the house - so much is still needed... The most important thing is that everyone is alive, that my children and grandchildren are with me," says Ms. Angela.

"My office was here, over there was our bedroom, and this is our living room, where my children and I always gathered at the festive table... Everything disappeared in the blink of an eye. The wife could not stand the stress: and here came a stroke...". Mr. Anatolii from Irpin shows his residence, which was looted as a result of hostilities. The smell of burning and a draft wandering through the corridor. Broken windows and doors. The high-rise building cannot be restored, it will soon be demolished…

A Russian rocket hit Ms. Valentyna‘s home from the village of Baklanova Muraviika in Chernihiv Region. Only the foundation remained, along with a cellar and a shed in which a piece of deadly iron was stuck. The rose bushes survived and continue blooming in the yard... "Good people had an empty house - they allowed us to settle there. But we have neither furniture, nor dishes, nor clothes of our own... And we also don't have the strength to come here, to the ashes. But we still come … every day. They have been building their house for fifteen years on end".

Each family has its own story marked by pain. Mutilated housing, lost property, burned past, destroyed plans... Difficult memories that cannot be suppressed by anything. And at the same time there is faith in the future and hope for victory and peace. Hope that can be nurtured, and the support of caring people.

"Family to Family" is a joint project of Caritas Spes and Caritas Polska, aimed at supporting Ukrainians who suffered from Russian aggression. 500 families living in the territory of the Kyiv-Zhytomyr Diocese will receive monthly financial assistance - 2,220 hryvnias per family member during the year. Funds will come from Polish families and parishes of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland, through Caritas Poland.
