When faith is stronger than circumstances: case management helps Ms. Iryna on her path to recovery

When faith is stronger than circumstances: case management helps Ms. Iryna on her path to recovery

We must be grateful for what we have today, because life can turn upside down in an instant.

Ms. Iryna (name changed for ethical reasons) was in good health, raised two sons, and ran her own business. At first, she received the devastating news that her son, who went to defend Ukraine in the first days of the full-scale invasion, had gone missing. But she has not lost hope of seeing and embracing him again.

However, one tragic incident divided her life into “before” and “after.” She accidentally fell down the stairs in her own home and sustained severe injuries that left her bedridden. In 70% of such cases, people are left paralyzed for life — but Iryna chose not to give up and has been working hard to get back on her feet. Yet, this journey at a high cost.

Since her second son is also serving to protect Ukraine, Iryna lives alone and requires the help of a caregiver in her daily life. Thanks to daily rehabilitation and sessions with doctors — which are also very expensive — she can now hold her posture and sit for a few minutes without support. To cover the costs of rehabilitation, medications, and assistance, she sold her car. Her son helps financially, but it is still not enough — her pension is minimal, and she had to close her business.

“The most important thing is to keep doing it regularly and never stop. Slowly but surely, things start to improve. What matters most is to believe. And I am strong — I have someone to live for, so I will get through this. I’m truly grateful to you. I didn’t know anyone could help. My savings are long gone, and the money from the car is also running out, but I can’t interrupt my rehabilitation. That’s why I’ll spend the aid on treatment and rehab,” says Ms. Iryna.

Case managers from Caritas-Spes Ukraine registered Ms. Iryna for financial assistance. We sincerely believe that she will reach her goal and one day be able to walk on her own toward her sons and embrace them again. No matter what hardships fate throws our way, with strong character, sincere faith in our hearts, and hope for a better future, we can overcome anything. We are sincerely grateful to Caritas Österreich, NACHBAR IN NOT, Caritas Schweiz, and Caritas Zagrebačke nadbiskupije for the opportunity to help people in difficult situations and restore hope to them.
